You need to claim your authentic power if you feel powerless. You are not powerless. This post is especially for you if you feel powerless because you’ve been abused in some way.

It’s been my experience that a lot of people with eating disorders like compulsive overeating, bulimia, and anorexia, have at some point felt powerless in their lives. I also know a lot of people who abuse food for the same reason, because at some point they felt like they had their power taken away from them by someone or something else.

Feelings of powerlessness often happen because of some kind of physical, mental, verbal, and/or sexual abuse. They happen when your personal boundaries get violated and you don’t defend yourself for whatever reason.

Claim your authentic power because abusing food won’t keep you safe

Abusing food can give you a feeling of power and control early on. You can use it to give yourself a kind of high. Or use it to comfort or numb yourself. You can abuse it to give yourself a sense of courage over your fears. Or value when you doubt your self-worth.

You can overeat to create a wall of flesh around yourself that you hope will keep you from getting hurt again. You can starve because that’s the only way you know how to show you have power over something in your life, even something as small as food. You can throw up everything you eat because maybe you tell yourself that you can’t control who violates your boundaries, but you can control what stays in your body and what doesn’t.

Abusing food only gives you the illusion of control

The thing is, abusing food just gives you the illusion of control. It might feel real, but it isn’t real. Life still happens to you without asking your permission first.

You can still get hurt, abused, and violated even while you’re trying to use food to protect yourself. Being overweight won’t keep anyone from treating you how they’re going to treat you. Starving won’t stop someone from crossing the line again. Vomiting won’t make anyone think twice about doing what they want to do to you. Overeating won’t keep you safe.

Claim your authentic power by taking it back

Authentic power is being able to take care of yourself no matter what happens, no matter what anybody says or does, no matter your circumstances, no matter what events transpire in your life.

Your power, along with your body, are the only two things you ever have. The only way to get your power back is to take it. So take it back.

You take your power back by making different choices. Nothing makes you feel powerless faster than telling yourself you have no choices. You always have choices. Maybe you don’t have any great choices. Maybe the choices throw you clean out of your comfort zone or fill you with fear.

You need to believe deep down in your bones that you are not stuck. You are not powerless because you have choices as to what you’re going to believe, what you’ll allow in your life and what you won’t, what you do with your time, and the list goes on.

So the only question you need to answer is: What choices will you make now?

Claim your authentic power by learning self-defense

One of the best things you can ever do for yourself, especially if you’ve been abused in some way, is to take a self-defense course. Then keep taking them until the techniques are second-nature. Learn to defend yourself and your boundaries from unwanted intrusions. Learn what to do to keep yourself safe when telling someone no isn’t enough to make them listen.

You’ll also get two incredibly valuable things if you’ll learn how to defend yourself:

  1. You’ll learn that you’re worth defending and
  2. You’ll reclaim your authentic power.

And those two things, my friends, are worth your body weight in gold.

My weight-loss journey & how it can help you claim your authentic power

I got free. Your life can be that way too.

I made my own path because I needed to get myself out of the crazy-making behavior I was having around food. I needed no restrictions, no weighing and measuring food, no off-limit foods, no more judgment around food, no more judging my self-worth based on the scale, no more you’re-not-doing-it-perfectly diet rules that were only fueling my constant thinking about and obsession with food. I needed to modify and change any weight-loss technique I found useful to suit my own personal needs.

  • I lost 160+ pounds naturally & have kept it off for 8 years and counting.
  • I no longer have any eating disorders.
  • I no longer have a fear of food.

Just imagine what you could be doing with your life, following your own dreams and reaching your own goals, cultivating your own passions, making both your inner and outer worlds a more blissful and peaceful place, if you weren’t running in circles on the diet-go-round.

I got that for my life. I want it for yours. My books will show you how.
